Central Coast Lawyers Society Presentation

Andrew Caska, Principal Patent Attorney of Caska IP, recently provided a presentation to the Central Coast Law Society at the quarterly dinner meeting. The dinner was held at the Lakehouse at the Entrance – which was an excellent venue.  The attendance of Central Coast Lawyers was strong with firms in attendance from all over the Central Coast including Gosford, Erina, The Entrance, Tuggerah and Wyong.

Intellectual Property law on the Central Coast

We presented on a range of topics in relation to intellectual property law focussing on patent, trade marks and designs. We begun our presentation with the simple question – what is a patent attorney? This proved to be very interesting as most of the lawyers in the room did not fully understand that role of a patent and trade mark attorney and differences between a patent attorney and a patent lawyer.

Brief Refresh on Patent Law and Process

We provided the Central Coast lawyers with a brief refresher in relation to patent law and the patent process. In particular, we highlighted the recent changes to the Australian Patent Act and also the changes made to USA patent law arising out of the America Invents Act.

Apple. vs Samsung

We then moved on to talk about the Apple and Samsung patent dispute and presented some entertaining aspects to the case including the enormity of the case which had required that two Judges be appointed at the Federal Court level to hear the initial case.  We also discussed one of Apples most recently issued slide to unlock patents – US Patents (US 8286103 B2) – which appears to provide even broader protection in comparison to the slide to unlock patents previously issued and subject to recent overseas litigation.

Patent Attorneys on the Central Coast

We hope that our presentation was both entertaining and provided the lawyers on the Central Coast with a refresher as to some of the most important aspects of patent law. Importantly, we hope that Central Coast practitioners now know that there is a patent attorney on the Central Coast who is able to provide expert affordable services to inventors and business in the Central Coast and wider Hunter regions.
